Modeling laser transmission welding of thermoplastics requires knowledge of the optical properties of the two materials being joined. Previous work measuring optical properties for this purpose placed little importance on the light reflection, emphasizing the light transmitted through a material. This paper presents work creating a lowcost solution allowing simultaneous measurement of the light transmission and reflection of clear rigid poly vinyl chloride from a diode laser source. Total reflection is quantified by numerically integrating measurements of the light reflection at specified locations around the perimeter of a sphere surrounding the sample; simultaneously the light transmission through the samples is measured. From a designed experiment involving two factors—surface finish and material thickness—the absorption coefficient of clear rigid poly vinyl chloride was calculated. In addition the quantity and distribution of light reflection was found to be dependent on the surface finish. © 2006 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers. DOI: 10.1117/1.2353269

Effect of some additives on degradation of poly (vinyl chloride- co- vinyl

The thermal decomposition of 86 % vinyl chloride 14 % vinyl acetate copolymer wasstudied by the conductometry technique in the presence of nitrogen. The kinetics of stability andthermal degradation of vinyl chloride- co- vinyl acetate (PVC- co- PVAc) copolymer withcopper, copper oxide and tricalcium dicitrate (st) were investigated at various temperatures (150-180 oC ) in solution. The rate coe...

Near-Infrared Laser Absorption of Poly(vinyl chloride) at Elevated Temperatures

Modeling laser transmission welding of thermoplastics requires knowledge of the optical properties of the materials being joined. The optical properties are highly dependent on their unique combinations of base polymer, pigments, and fillers. Because of the complex phase transition that occurs when heating thermoplastics, the optical properties are not a constant, but a function of temperature....

Non-Destructive Evaluation of Multi-layer Piping using Laser Ultrasonic Technique

Abstract Recently, multilayer piping has been used widely. Multilayer piping has excellent durability and corrosion resistance. An effective means for quality maintenance of multilayer piping is the laser ultrasonic technique for checking the state of adhesion of the vinyl chloride layer and the steel layer of multilayer piping. The wave is refracted at the interface between the steel layer and...

Removal of Dilute Benzene in Water through Ionic Liquid/Poly(Vinyl Chloride) Membranes by Pervaporation

This paper focuses on the effects of the addition of an ionic liquid, 1-Allyl-3-butylimidazilium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl)imide ([ABIM]TFSI), which has a high affinity for benzene, into the poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane on the pervaporation characteristics of the removal of benzene from aqueous solutions of dilute benzene. When aqueous solutions of 100~500 ppm benzene were permeated ...

The Plasticizing Mechanism and Effect of Aluminium Chloride and Glycerin on Poly(vinyl alcohol) Films

Poly(Vinyl Alcohol) (PVA) films were prepared with AlCl3·6H2O/glycerin and AlCl3·6H2O/poly glycerin as two kinds of complex plasticizer. The micromorphology of pure PVA film and PVA films plasticized with complex plasticizer was observed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The interaction between complex plas...
